I would like to take this time to welcome you to the Autism in a Nutshell website, which at this point is in its infancy. My hope is that Autism in a Nutshell can help simplify a very complex subject. In my experience virtually, all autistic children can see marked improvement in their cognitive function and health, when their underlying health conditions are treated.
One of our goals is show parents that autism spectrum disorders are responsive to medical treatment. The trick is understanding and identifying those health issues and getting the right treatment. A number of studies have shown that children with autism have markers indicating high levels of oxidative stress, which affects their entire body, not just the brain. Successful treatment of autism boils down to is a couple of things in most cases: finding and treating the source of the oxidative stress and improving the body's ability to handle oxidative stress. Unfortunately, that is where the simplicity ends, as there are many causes of increased oxidative stress.
Primary goal of this website is to explore those issues and possible solutions. Many children have recovered from autism, but each child's journey is a bit different. What works for one child may not necessarily work for every child. It is unlikely that there will ever be a "miracle cure" or "silver bullet cure" for autism. However, we currently understand enough about autism to successfully treat many of the underlying medical conditions.
